Ok you have looked and thought about the pros and cons of adopting and made the decision to adopt.  What is your next step? Well, below I have listed the steps that you need to go through prior to the completion of the adoption.

Adopting On Your Own ................. (Not that difficult)..........

bullet

File the I600 or I600A form with the Immigration and Naturalization Office.

bullet

Locate a lawyer from the country you wish to adopt.

bullet

After locating the Lawyer make sure that both of you understand what it is you are looking to accomplish and at this time get the fees in writing, even thou it is an estimate.

bullet

After locating a lawyer you will need to locate an agency that does a homestudy.  You may want to contact several agencies just to get an idea of what duties each performs as well as the fees that they charge.  Of course if you are going through and agency to adopt, this is already included in the package that they will send to you.

bullet

Fill out the forms and submit the initial homestudy application to the agency.

bullet

They in turn will send you a packet with all sorts of information such as:
bullet

Police Clearance

bullet

Child Protection Clearance

bullet

and much more.

bullet

At the same time that you have just received your homestudy packet, you will also get a follow-up call from the agency to let you know that you have been assigned a social worker to answer your questions and to also perform the homestudy interview.

bullet

The Social Worker will contact you and make a schedule time for your first meeting.
bullet

All meetings should be convenient and comfortable for you and your social worker.

bullet

Make arrangements to meet:
bullet

Home

bullet

Place of Business

bullet

Someplace where both of you can talk

bullet

There should be a total of three visits (interviews) in which the social worker will gather information about your life, finances and an overall sense of what your childhood was like and your potential parenting skills.

To sum up the homestudy process, it is a time to reflect on how you were as a child, your association with the members in your family and whether you are really ready to commit to a new person in your life.
